The book, "Have you filled a bucket today?" By Carole McCloud, will be used as a way to support positive behaviors in my room. This book explains to students that we all carry an invisible bucket in which we keep our feelings about ourselves. When our buckets are full, we are happy; when they are empty, we are sad. It is important that students learn that when they fill someone’s bucket, they also fill their own bucket because it feels good to make others happy and make good choices. The concept of being a bucket dipper is also introduced. A bucket dipper is a person who hurts other people's feelings or chooses to ignore rules and make inappropriate choices.
I want to teach my students to be good citizens who care for and respect each other. I believe it is important to help build good character so that students value themselves and each other. I encourage them to be helpful, compassionate and unselfish classmates.
We will be using a “bucket filling” system. This will reinforce our classroom rules and the All Star Code. Children will start everyday with 3 token in their "bucket". Throughout the day they have the opportunity to earn more...I love this part... I will be on the look-out for positive role-models. They are the kids making good choices, following school rules, being great listeners, helping others, working hard, etc. The more tokens they earn, the happier I am! (Which fills my bucket too!) Students will be rewarded with chances in our daily prize drawings based on how many token they have at the end of the day. I have purchased many items for our prize bin, but I am asking for donations as well to keep it stocked. If you are out and about and see items that second graders might enjoy, we’d love to add them. Items could be stickers, pencils, small toys, books, etc.
If a child is struggling with following classroom rules or needs reminders to make good choices, the opposite happens. They will need to "dip" into their bucket and remove a token. If a child ends the day with zero tokens, parents will be notified via email.
Students catch on that positive behavior is rewarding! A good gauge of how your child's day was is by how many tokens they have at the end of the day. Ask your child about being a bucket filler - and how many tokens they earned each day!
