Welcome to 2nd grade with Mrs. Martin!
To keep our classroom functioning at peak performance, there are a few things I want to share with you about the mechanics of our room. I am positive we will have a very successful year together and I look forward to working with your child!
Supplies
Please put your child’s name on all school supply items. Throughout the year things get “misplaced” and it makes it easy to find the owner. Also, please ask your child periodically if they need more pencils, glue, scissors, etc. It is difficult to try to complete projects without the proper supplies. Please be sure your child has headphones labeled with their name for our computer lab time as well.
Supplies/Special activity fees
We are asking for $10.00 from each child to help cover the cost of classroom projects, supplies and special activities we will do this year. Please send the money in an envelope with your child’s name. Thank you!
Shoptalk
Each day students will bring home a yellow sheet titled SHOPTALK. This is a sentence they have copied from the board earlier that morning and have discussed in class. It may be a reminder for them, or it may be about something we have learned that day. Students are to read the sentence to you and talk about it. You then will sign or initial the sheet and return it to school the next day. This is used as a communication tool for your child to share about what is happening in our classroom. It will come home each night in their take-home folder.
Snacks
Your child may bring in a nutritious snack to have during the day. Some ideas are fruit, granola bars, pretzels, etc. Due to several students with severe, life threatening allergies, please avoid products that contain peanuts/tree nuts! They may also bring in a water bottle and use it throughout the day, as long as it isn’t a distraction to them.
Homework
Homework for the week will consist of finishing up any classroom work that is not completed, talking about any daily research or looking for interesting facts and topics that relate to our current unit of study. Reading daily is also extremely important. They will be bringing books home with the intention of reading and discussing it with an adult.
On occasion your child will have assigned homework. When this is the case, I will go over the assignment with them prior to sending it home and have them write a due date on top of it.
Please ask your child each night if they have any unfinished classroom work that needs to be completed. At the end of the day I will remind them and try to help them put unfinished work in their take-home folder, but it will be their responsibility to finish and return it.
Book Orders
Book order forms will be coming home several times throughout the year. Should you choose to order you may do so online with our class code MHLPM on www.scholastic.com or you can send a check made out to the book order company with the attached order.
Newsletters
You can expect to receive a newsletter via email at least twice per month. Most weeks they will be sent on Fridays. Newsletters will also be uploaded to my website under the "newsletter" tab for your reference.
I hope this has helped to explain some of our classroom procedures. Please feel free to call or email me if you have any questions. I look forward to a wonderful year with all of you.
